The Three Tunes
Alright, so after some investigation (alright, so it actually says it loud and clear in the blue book) I just need to correct myself on The Tunes in the Three Tunes- it is a Jig, Reel, and Hornpipe. The Jig is Haste to the Wedding, the Reel is the German Beau, and the Hornpipe is (duh!) Leslie's Hornpipe. Thanks to Emily for pointing this out!!!

lol, Well we all know that darn book can be confusing! The Three Tunes is one of my favorite dances. Just as a FYI as I am sure you know, Hornpipes and reels can be the same timing, thats why this dance works out. Reels are 4/4 timing and as you know from your studying that Hornpipes can be either 2/4 or 4/4 timing. They are played at different speeds. Which I am not a musician here, doesnt make sense to me and this is why. Both Reels and Slow Hornpipes are played at speed 113, if a dancer was to try to dance a reel to a slow hornpipe it could be done it would be just really slow, so I am not really sure how the actual speed of Leslie's Hornpipe works out with this dance. Other music things to take note to that most do not notice, both light jigs and heavy jigs are also the same time- 6/8 but played at different speeds. Oh the interesting things you learn as you study! Good luck with it all! I know I am studying my butt off!
Hey! Had fun meeting you in class tonight and thought I'd come look for your blog! Nice job. :) Regarding your post below about getting started with each new section...I found that getting started on each book is just killer. The way I started was to work on 1 dance, and then add another dance every few days. That gave my brain time to let each dance sink in and gave me a good understanding of what was going on in each one. I'd write out the order, write out how to teach each section, look for things that were similar/different to previous dances, watch any recordings I had of it multiple times, make flash cards about that dance to add to my massive pile, etc. If possible, I'd get the dancers together at the school I taught for and teach them before moving on to the next dance. By the end of each book, I'd really know what I was talking about! :)
emily!, you're mostly right. reels and hp's are danced primarily in 4/4 timing but there is a BIG difference in "beats per minute." hp's are danced at 113bpm, reels however are normally the following, 116bpm: advanced steps, and 118bpm: for easy reels. being that the hp is danced slower, it justifies the syncopation you-i and everyone else notices in the all of the hp tunes. take care ladies, and happy studying!
